The Latest News from MCC Churches facing Hurricanes and Other Disasters

September 2008

Most of the MCC Churches in the path of recent hurricanes face the same destruction and frustrations as other individuals and congregations in the affected areas.  Utilities, shelter, drinkable water and able-bodied workers are many off the shortages they face.  Extensive repairs, loss of property, inability to congregate, and destruction of worship materials and church files are just some of the difficulties encountered.

When storm clouds begin to stir on the horizon, flood waters rise above the barriers, the winds shift, as wild fires burn out of control, MCC has instituted a means to help keep us informed and connected.  The new Disaster Relief Blog page allows us to share updates, prayer requests and praise reports from our affected communities and post them to the web as soon as we are made aware.  Reports from Resurrection MCC in Houston; Harbor MCC in Galveston; Baton Rouge MCC; Big Easy MCC in New Orleans; MCC of the Living Springs, Eureka Springs; Spirit of Christ MCC in Joplin, MO and others are all on the site.  The link is: http://mccdisasterrelief.wordpress.com/

After the devastations of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches set up the MCC Disaster Relief Fund.  MCC's members and friends have been impacted by earthquakes, wild fires, floods and catastrophic medical and political situations involving lay and clergy leaders of our churches in Nova Scotia, Nigeria, Jamaica, Johannesburg and the United States.  MCCs recognize that often LGBT congregations and individuals are particularly vulnerable within these communities.

Because of your continued generosity and love demonstrated in giving to our Benevolence Fund, Trinity’s Board of Directors recently voted unanimously to give $500 to the MCC Disaster Relief Fund.  Trinity MCC also regularly responds locally and individually with this fund as needs arise.  Please continue to consider your commitment beyond your regular giving to Trinity’s Benevolence Fund.  Our fast response to the need was facilitated by your abundant charity.  To give to the Benevolence Fund, simply mark the memo portion of your check or write on your giving envelope the words “Benevolence Fund.”

In Christ,
